Essure Recall
Essure is a form of permanent, non-surgical female birth control. According to Bayer Pharmaceuticals, the device is 99.3% effective at preventing pregnancy. However, the FDA has issued a recall on devices implemented prior to 2016 due to side effects such as organ perforation, device migration, autoimmune disorders, and metal allergies, all leading to the need for further surgery. The device is implanted directly into the fallopian tubes, which causes scar tissue to build up and block sperm from reaching the eggs. Essure implants are made of polyester fibers, nickel, titanium, platinum, silver-tin, and stainless steel, but do not contain hormones.
